Finland is divided into: 19 regions (Finnish maakunta, Swedish landskap) the regions are divided into 70 sub-regions (Finnish seutukunta, Swedish ekonomisk region) the sub-regions are divided into 311 municipalities (Finnish kunta, Swedish kommun).

Finland has a parliamentary system, with the main source of the law the constitution of March 2000. The legal system is based on a civil law system that originates from the Swedish law. European Community law is directly applicable and takes precedence over national legislation.
In Finland, the executive power is divided between the President and the Prime Minister. Under the new Constitution that took effect in 2000 and was amended in 2012, the President directs foreign policy in co-operation with the Prime Minister and other government officials.
The 200-member unicameral Parliament of Finland (Eduskunta (Finnish), Riksdag (Swedish)) is the supreme legislative authority in Finland. The parliament may alter the Constitution of Finland, bring about the resignation of the Government, and override presidential vetoes.
There are three levels of courts: local, appellate, and supreme. The final court of appeal, the Supreme Court (Korkeinoikeus), sits in Helsinki. There are also the Supreme Administrative Court, a number of provincial administrative courts, and some special tribunals.
Finland’s newest Prime Minister took office, leading a coalition government in which all five party leaders are women. At 34, Sanna Marin is the world’s youngest head of state, and three of her other coalition leaders are also younger than 35. Twelve of the nineteen new Finnish cabinet members are women, meaning Finland’s government has the second-highest percentage of female ministers in the world, after Spain.
